Angel of Love Project
The St Francis Care Centre provides residential care to 20 children aged 0-7 years who have been infected with and/or affected by HIV and AIDS. Once the children have been stabilized medically we focus on returning the children to a family of their own- whether it be an extended biological family (eg. Granny, uncle, aunt etc) or host/ foster family. Children need to belong and need to grow up within a family environment if they are to develop into well adjusted adults.
In order to stabilize the children medically and find suitable homes for them we need donors to support us and thus we have developed the “Angel of Love” project. This donor will receive a certificate of recognition as an “Angel of Love” to a specific child and will be updated on the progress of that child. There will, however, not be any further commitment required in terms of caring for the child.
The “Angel of Love” project presents a win-win situation for both the centre as well as the donor. The Centre benefits financially and can provide the care and future planning that the child requires. The donor can benefit by deducting the donation from tax as the Centre is registered in terms of Section 18(A) of the Income Tax Act and, if a company, can also earn BEE points as the donation will be acknowledged and it will be confirmed that 98% of the Centre`s beneficiaries belong to the “Black” population group
Some of the children at the Centre who require an “Angel of Love” are:
1. Gift D- A boy aged 16 months whose mother passed away when he was 10 months old. Referred to our Centre by the Far East Rand Hospital in a very poor, dehydrated condition. He is HIV positive and is also on TB treatment. Gift has stabilized and is showing good progress since starting antiretroviral treatment.
R 150 per month (R 1800 per annum) will assist us to provide Gift with residential care, food, formula, medicines and psycho- social care. In addition we will screen for a host/ foster family so that Gift can again have a loving family of his own
2. Nkosinathi M. – A boy aged 4 years who was placed at our Centre due to the fact that his biological mother was very ill and could not take care of him. He is HIV+ and is receiving antiretroviral treatment under our supervision. His progress is good and efforts are being made to reunite him with his biological mother when her condition improves.
R100 per month (R 1200 per annum) will assist us to provide Nkosinathi with residential care, food, medicines and psycho-social support.
3. Alfred N.- a 6 year old boy whose mother died of AIDS when he was 4 years old. His father left him in a shack in the care of a brother who was not much older whilst he went away on construction work. Alfred was referred to the Centre by the Far East Rand Hospital ready to die! We have nursed him back to health, put him on ARV treatment and are in the process of reuniting him with his grandparents. By coming to us his life was saved!
R 100 per month (R 1200 per annum) will assist us to provide Alfred with the care that he currently needs and the reunification process so that he can again be with his biological family.
4. Simumelelo and Nompumelelo B.- twin girls aged 13 months who were abandoned by their teenage mother by birth. As is customary with twins born of an HIV positive mother one girl is HIV + and one girl is HIV-. Both babies are doing very well and developing normally. The HIV + baby is on antiretroviral treatment and is now stabilized and progressing satisfactorily. Host parents have been screened for these little girls and it is hoped that they will be transferred into foster care with a view to adoption in due course.
R 150 per month for each baby ( R1800 per annum) will assist us to provide these little girls with accommodation, food, formula, nappies and eventually a mom and dad of their own. And there are 26 more.
